Xeriscaping Tips
Water-wise, Water-smart Landscaping to Conserve Water
Xeriscaping, also called water-wise or water-smart landscaping, is a
landscaping method that uses the following techniques to conserve
water.
- Native and drought-tolerant plants
- Mulch to hold in moisture
- Hydrozoning, or grouping of plants according to their water needs.
In arid climates, landscaping with plants that don’t need much water can help reduce your costs significantly. Xeriscape landscapes do not need to be just cactuses and rock gardens. Water-wise landscapes can be green, cool landscapes full of beautiful plants that are maintained with water-efficient practices.
Select trees, shrubs and groundcovers based on their adaptability to your region’s soil and climate. Choose drought-tolerant plants. They tend to be slower growing and require less maintenance. Mowing, watering, and fertilizing chores will take less time and money, and your yard waste will be minimized.
